Omi’s oldest grand shrine dubbed the Itsukushima of Omi
Shirahige Shrine is the oldest shrine in Omi, and there are about 300 branch shrines all across Japan. The shrine is famous for its long history, which dates back over 2,000 years ago when the main shrine was built according to shrine records. The large torii gate floating on Lake Biwa is a very popular scenic spot of Shiga Prefecture. The shrine has been designated a Japan Heritage Site and attracts many visitors.
